A Funny Thing Happened While I was at the Gym

NOT.

I don’t really feel like rehashing this whole miserable story, but feel compelled to at least mention it.  Because stuff like this changes your days.  And it will probably come up again on future blogs.  After my ‘victorious’ run, I went to the gym for my weekly workout with Vicky, and had a GREAT workout.  One of those combo cardio/weights circuits that makes even me sweat.  After working out I was planning to head to Stockton to meet my sister at Yogelina (my favorite ‘tart’ frozen yogurt shop.)

I walked out of the gym and noticed my car was parked at a REALLY funny angle.  I’m not a great parker, so I have a habit of checking my parking to make sure I am centered and relatively straight.  And I thought, I’m SURE I didn’t park THAT crooked.  Worse yet, it looked like the car on the passenger side had parked so close to mine that it seemed like my car had dented hers.  It just didn’t make sense to me until I walked around to get in the drivers side, and BOTH DOORS WERE COMPLETELY BASHED IN!!!  Evidently an older gentleman was backing out of a place across the lot and ‘his foot slipped’ (his words, not mine.)  He hit my car so hard that it shoved my car into that other car and my car was also BASHED IN on the passenger side.

Insert many paragraphs of angry tense Debby arguing with multiple insurance agents for hours and hours.  (You might recall my dislike of all insurance companies.)

At the end of the day, I called my BFF and asked, ‘since you have known me, would you say I have had more than my share of bad luck with cars?’  And she said, ‘Yes.’  But then I said, ‘but I realize at the same time that I have been extraordinarily blessed with more than my share of really good friends.’  I had gotten home because my good friend Sandi came and rescued me so I didn’t have to sit in a parking lot and argue on my cell phone.  And then she let me borrow her car for the night, since the insurance companies couldn’t get it together to get me a rental car before the end of the day.  And yes, I did stress eat just a little.  We finally went out to lunch at 2 pm, and I did get a quesadilla and I did enjoy it very much.  I rescued the day by having my favorite turkey salad combo that comes in at only 135 calories for dinner, and ended up with a great dish of ‘strawberry frozen yogurt’ (a la Dietgirl) with 16 chocolate chips and 3 walnut halves crumbled on top (that was because I didn’t get to go to Yogelina in Stockton.)

Today things seem a little calmer and brighter.  I spent the afternoon with Sandi (because we had planned a crafting day a long time ago) and they brought the rental car to me.  I got a little sad when I went to get some stuff out of my car at the body shop.  You know, they just give you a basic car from the rental place.  And my car was SUCH a nice car.  I didn’t appreciate it as much as I should have.  AND, it was paid off.  I was hoping to get a couple more years of ‘no car payment’ out of it.  But I went to the gym (man, there’s a whole ‘nother group of people in there at 4pm) and really challenged myself to work out hard, and then headed home to the doggies.

The End.

  1. {{debby}} You know what I loved, though? Is that in the midst of your story about the car, you acknowledged the blessings of such good friends. There’s always a gift somewhere in the rubble, you know? Hope things look up today.

  2. Debby,
I hope you get your car back soon all fixed up. Good job on still getting your workouts in and not going way over board on the stress eating. Hope your day is better today!

  3. Wow! Sweety! I’ve never had anything like that happen to me! I can’t imagine walking out and seeing that! My jaw would have been on the ground or shoot maybe my whole body…somebody would have had to pick me up! LOL! Sounds like you salvaged the day though. Yeah for Sandi! I love my car too. Its a 2001 or maybe 02 blue Ford Focus. Runs like a champ.. She’s got a spoiler on the back that gives it just enough of a sporty feel to it. She’s paid off and i really don’t appreciate her like i should. I think you’ve inspired me to lavish some lovin’ on her today. I think she needs a bath and a good cleaning out. LOL! Oh and its time for an oil change. 🙂 Are going to be able to have your car fixed or is it time for a new one?????

  4. OH NOOOOOOO!!!!!! What a bummer!! I think you handled it great though. Can the car be fixed? Oh I hate it when stuff like that happens!! Hope today has been better! 🙂

  5. Oog, that is an awful thing to have happened!!! My car is on the 10-year plan (paid for it for 5 years and hope to keep it going for another 5) – we are at 7 1/2 years and I cross my fingers daily that nothing major goes wrong. It’s nice not having a car payment – I hope they can fix your car good as new so you won’t have to deal with that, too. So sorry you had to deal with all of that mess!

  6. I am so sorry! Hopefully all will work out with the insurance and car repairs/replacement. And can someone check this gentleman and make sure he should still be driving???

At least you have a lot of wonderful friends to help you out!

  7. Oh, Debby! I’m sorry to hear that happened to you. Glad no one was hurt, though, and that your friend helped you out. Hope things go more smoothly from here on out with the situation.
