Today is exactly six months since I had my knee replacement surgery. And sure enough, just like so many people reassured me, I am feeling pretty great. Its amazing to me how much stronger I am with just one knee being in better shape. Carrying 50 pound sacks of animal feed is not such a big deal any more.

Starting probably a week before Christmas, I started taking longer and more vigorous walks. Three days a week, I take the longer walk, go up and down my back stairs 5 times, and do my P.T. exercises and stretches. The other three days I go to the gym and do the weight machines, and I have steadily increased my time on the bike–now I’m up to 40 minutes.

Last week I had some work done on my car, and so I told my friend that I would meet her at the end of my road. Its only a mile and a half, but it includes that big steep hill. I haven’t walked up that hill for a couple of years. And it was not bad–my knee felt great!

I’m so grateful to all of you who took the time to write and encourage me with your own, or your friend’s experiences.

Just because I haven’t included pictures for a while, here’s a couple of the dogs.

Chloe and Zoey sharing their bed-perch:

And Bessie looked so funny relaxing in her fireside perch, I went to take a picture, and of course, Sophie photo-bombed it. She can hear a camera from a mile away!

  1. I’m so happy to hear this! Love that you are feeling so strong and super impressed with how you’ve not only kept up with your workouts but have increased the intensity – I swear, you are so determined to stay fit and it shows! And big huzzah for that long walk…I remember pre-surgery, it was so painful for you when we walked around Pacific Grove. It’s great to see you feeling so good!!!

Also, the pups, they make me smile. Especially Sophie, who is trying to look all casual in that picture. WHO ME? I WAS JUST STANDING HERE ALL ALONG.

    • Its making me pretty happy to exercise more and challenge myself in little ways.

Yes, Sophie is the queen of casual. Nine times out of ten when I try to take a picture of the girls sleeping, Sophie will put her head up “oh, be sure to get my best side.”

  2. This makes me so happy to read. I don’t think folks really understand how “quality” of life is so important. To not have pain every time you move is a fabulous thing. But actually being able to move in the ways you want to is even better.

  3. So glad you are doing well with that knee. Maybe you will inspire me to start walking again – let alone go to the gym. Yoga seems to be all I can manage these days. Although- that’s good but I need a little more weight bearing work. LOVE your chair btw! I used to have one similar to it in a previous lifetime.
